Crap I Allow to Get to Me
Dec. 6th, 2004 02:23 pmSo, yeah. Strange, how something so small can have such a huge impact. I'm almost embarrassed to admit this.
I remember sitting in church, about eight years ago, and hearing the candy cane story. You've probably heard it by now, and if you're like me, your teeth grind every time. A quick Google search gives us this, and this, and this, and this, but only the Snopes site give us anything approaching objective.
Is it weird that this led directly to my dumping Christianity? There were other factors, of course, but at the time, I remember sitting in church and realizing that these people were lying to me. They were re-writing history to serve their own purposes, and no one cared whether or not it was true. They didn't see how dangerous and damaging a thing this was. And this bothered me so deeply, so profoundly, that I left the church, and Christianity entirely.
There were some other steps in between there, of course, but it's a long and boring story.
