Bankruptcy

It's no secret: I'm declaring bankruptcy. It sucks. I try to keep my chin up about it.

When I finally gave up and admitted that, yes, bankruptcy exists specifically for the situation that I am in, I decided that I would go through the process without a lawyer. That way, I would only get an F+ in Financial Responsibility, and not the big red F that I'd earned. Such was my thinking, anyway.

My advice, now? Get a freaking lawyer. Oh My God, get a lawyer.

I'd also like to mention something about the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. Having started this process before its enactment, and then having to redo all the paperwork afterward, I can safely, and with great confidence, state that the bill had fuck all to do with abuse prevention or consumer protection, and everything to do with discouraging legitimate claimants from applying for relief. Citibank, MBNA, and J.P. Morgan Chase wrote the bill, Iowa senator Chuck Grassley (R) and Wisconsin rep Jim Sensenbrenner (R) sponsored it, and Bush signed it. It's not for you.
